Gane was born in Ilford, Essex, and started his musical career by experimenting with noise that was harsh in the 1980s under the pseudonym Unkommunitim which released cassettes that were self-financed on Black Dwarf Wreckordings along with his fellow Unkommuniti group members Kallous Boys and various other noise projects.

He was a major part of McCarthy in 1985, until the band’s dissolution in 1990. Gane later joined Stereolab along with Laetitia Sadier. The first time they formed the group, they recruited former Chills bassist Martin Kean, drummer Joe Dilworth and Gina Morris on backing vocals. In 1993, the group was signed to the American major label Elektra and then disbanded from their contract in 2004. in 2009 Stereolab declared their breakup.

In 2013, he released Blood-Drums under the moniker Cavern of Anti-Matter, a band formed together with Holger Zapf and Dilworth. It was followed by the 2016 album Void Beats / Invocation Trex on Duophonic Records. It featured contributions by Bradford Cox and Peter Kember and Jan St. Werner. Live the band was reduced to a duo. In January 2017, Blood Drums was re-released through Duophonic.
