Tim de Zeeuw has served on the HST Time Allocation Committee, was chair of the Space Telescope Institute Council for four years. He also served as a director on the board of the American-based Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy. In 2003-2006 Tim was a member of ESO’s governing body called the Council and was chair of the Council Scientific Strategy Working Group. In this capacity, he contributed to the formulation of ESO’s strategic objectives in 2004 as well as to the change within the ESO committee structure, including the new mandates of OPC and the STC as well as the OPC. He was the primary writer of a report for Council that outlined three possible scenarios for ESO’s future roles in European Astronomy. In 2006/2007, he was chair of the Science Vision Working Group set by ASTRONET which is an ERA-NET project which is funded through the European Commission and set up by funding agencies across Europe. In 2006/7, the Science Vision Working Group established the global European Science Vision for Astronomy for the coming 20 years.
Pieter Timotheus “Tim” de Zeeuw (born 1956 in Sleen) is a Dutch astronomer specializing in the formation, structure and dynamics of galaxies. He was educated at Leiden, gaining a degree in mathematics in 1976 and one in astronomy in 1977. He graduated from Leiden with a PhD in astronomy in 1984. After stints in the US at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and at Caltech, he returned to the Netherlands in 1990 to become professor of theoretical astronomy at Leiden. In 2003, he was appointed the scientific director of Leiden Observatory, and from 2007 to 2017 he was the director general of ESO. In 2009, he was awarded the Brouwer Award by the Division on Dynamical Astronomy of the American Astronomical Society. He is married to astronomer Ewine van Dishoeck. On 14 May 2018 at the annual Netherlands Astronomy Conference, he was awarded the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
As a theoretical physicist trained in the field of stellar dynamics, he began to expand his studies to include understanding and analysis of the observations and was also involved in the design of new instruments. The year 1995 was the time he started the project along in collaboration with R. Bacon and R. Davies to build SAURON an integral-field panoramic spectrograph designed for the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope (WHT). The SAURON collaboration led to subsequent studies on galactic nuclei with the VLT as well as the decision to transfer the integral field spectrumrograph OASIS out of on the Canada France Hawaii Telescope to the WHT and to outfit the WHT with an optical guide-star and to participate in studies to develop integral-field instruments for JWST and the Hubble Space Telescope, to participation in studies for possible integral- Hubble Space Telescope and JWST as well as involvement on the design of the MUSE instrument for VLT.

In 1984, he began his work in the US initially as a member for a long time at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and, later, starting in 1988, he was an advanced researcher in The California Institute of Technology.
He returned in the Netherlands in 1990 and was appointed the professor of theoretical astronomy at Leiden University. He was appointed in 1993 to was the director in charge of NOVA which is the Netherlands Research School for Astronomy that coordinates graduate education and research in the five university institutes of astronomy that are located in the Netherlands. The goal of NOVA is to teach students in astronomy at the top global level, and to conduct astronomical research at the forefront throughout the Netherlands. Particularly the NOVA program resulted in Dutch involvement in the development of several VLT/VLTI instruments, for instance, the Band 9 ALMA receivers, in the study of E-ELT instruments and an instrument designed for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In 2003 He was appointed the as the Scientific Director for Leiden Observatory, a research institute located in Leiden University’s College of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Leiden University.
