Thozhar Thiyagu Biography

Thozhar Thiyagu is one of the most popular and richest Poet who was born on January 30, 1950 in Tamil Nadu, India. Thozhar Thiyagu (born 30th January, 1950) is also known under the name Comrade Thiyagu is an activist in the field of politics, social activism and writer from the Indian State in Tamil Nadu. In addition, he is General Secretary of the Tamil National Liberation Movement and is well-known for his expertise in Marxist ideologies.

Comrade Thiyagu was in jail and translated the first chapter of Das Kapital while in jail. Das Kapital, written by Karl Marx. As per the request of comrade Balasubramaniam began translating the other two sections of Das Kapital in January, 1980, which he completed during November. The entire translation was then published by NCBH and received a favorable response. In 1983, as the Eelam struggle grew more intense and there was a major uprising within the jails as well. In 1983, Comrade Thiyagu incarcerated at the Trichy jail, led an open procession of 1500 prisoners in support of the Eelam fight. Comrade Thiyagu, who was a member of in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) while in prison, was released in November 1985.

As an initiative to build Tamil National feeling among people, Comrade Thiyagu started the first Thai Tamil School on 7 June 1993 and such schools are functioning all over Tamil Nadu and have a good reputation among people. The principal political purpose of these schools is to feed in Tamil sentiment among the children, thereby configuring the base for the Tamil National sentiment.

In 2009, at the end of Eelam war, after Mullivaikal massacre, when most of the movements and parties believed that Prabhakaran would come back and Eelam war would move to the next phase, Comrade Thiyagu was the one who realized and published that the LTTE’s role is over in Eelam war and Eelam struggle had moved to the next phase. At the peak of the Eelam war, Comrade Thiyagu realized that Tamil Nadu was not able to strangle the Indian government to stop the war, due to the lack of a strong Tamil National Movement with a mass following.

Comrade Thiyagu took part in annihilation operations with his comrades. He in prison at the age 19. In 1971, prior to the announcement of a court decision that he was able to leave prison with his colleagues. The aim was to convey to the other prisoners that they were not exhausted even when they were imprisoned. The conviction for death was reduced to life-long prison. Even while he was in prison, he joined others in the ranks and continued in fighting to defend their rights. He continued to participate in numerous activities by way of “Prisoners Welfare Rights Union” and “Literacy Movement”. While in jail, Comrade Thiyagu started to learn more about the writings of Lenin and realized that the ineffective elimination strategy of the communist party in India(M-L).

When Comrade Thiyagu was awestruck by the ideas of communist books he was studying He delivered his first public address during the Indian National Congress general meeting in the year 1965. Because Congress was defeated in the elections held in 1967, the National Students Tamil Development team was created under the direction of Kamaraj. To address the group’s General Meeting, Comrade Thiyagu traveled to Madras for the first time. At that time the speaker spelled out his thoughts with clarity and confidence, even when Kamaraj, Kannadasan, Jayakandan and many other prominent individuals were at the podium. This event impressed Kamaraj and he commanded Comrade Thiyagu to give an opening speech at every convention to be held afterward.

In 1965, the family moved to Valangaiman. In the city, Comrade Thiyagu joined a typing school and came across his teacher, Mr. Ameerjohn, who ran the school of typing. Ameerjohn was a skeptic of the caste system, not only transformed Comrade Thiyagu to an Atheist but also influenced his thinking. At the time, there were people like Kuthusi Gurusamy who had split from Periyar’s self- respect movements. When Comrade Thiyagu was a participant in the first gathering organized by them and Ameerjohn, they attended the first convention. Ameerjohn, they bought books written by Karl Marx and Lenin. It was during this moment that Comrade Thiyagu became the first exposed to Marxism.

From the outset, Comrade Thiyagu courageously pointed out Communist Party of India (Marxist)’s wrong policies related to Eelam. On 15 September 1987, Thileepan began his hunger strike in Eelam. Comrade Thiyagu and some of his friends began “Thileepan Forum” to support him. At the meeting held on that day, Comrade Thiyagu explained about Eelam struggle in detail to the people. He did not hesitate to critique his party’s wrong views about the Eelam struggle. The next day, he was expelled from the Communist Party of India (Marxist). In January 1994, Comrade Thyagu and Suba. Veerapandian began the “Tamil Tamilar Movement”. Later, Tamil National Liberation Movement emerged from it. Four organisations including Tamil Tamilar Movement, and Tamil National Communist Party formed Tamil National Front. This movement had vigorously carried out various protests on Tamil Nadu’s key issues like Cauvery river water dispute issue and Mullai Periyar issue. When Tamil National Liberation movement was formed, “Social justice Tamil Nation” was proposed as the slogan. The aim of the organisation was to carry out Tamil National Politics inclusive social justice.
