The result was that Thomas Reichstein developed a special kind of rattan bark cloth sculptures. In 1997, he won an award at The Semperoper Dresden for a yearly presented award-winning sculpture. The jury was impressed with its balance of abstraction and actuality. He also found the effective connection to singing, music and dancing the fundamental aspects of opera in a similar way. Since then, Reichstein received requests for price-sculptures from the world of economics and politics (e.g. Dresdner Marketing price MTM Award). From January 1st, 1998 until 31 December 1998, he taught Thomas Reichstein in the Saxon stonemason’s school in Demitz , Thumitz. He created the stonework with particular techniques of design and also taught the art of freehand sketching, drawing, and modeling according to the natural world. In 1999 Thomas Reichstein operates several months of the year at a Buddhistfoundry in Ban Pong in Thailand. From 1999 until 2005, he created a beautiful collection of abstract art. In 2006, he collaborated alongside the German artist Doreen Wolff and , since 2010, even working with Catrin Grosse.
In 2006, Thomas Reichstein wins with a digression into the world of geometry. He designed from Platonic, Archimedean and Catalan bodies a Polyeder- Circlesculpture and thus achieves a competition of Saxony for a study academy first place.

In 1995, he established an workshop with the woodcarvers of Neuireland which is an island in Papua. He learned how to create mangrove carvings with traditional Malanggan style. The following year, he traveled for a visit to Oro Province in Papua. Tapa cloth was made out of the bark of the tropical mulberry tree. Utilizing this material, and ratstan sticks from Vietnam the artist created the Rattan-Tapa sculptures. He exhibited them at first at the museum of ethnography in Dresden.

Thomas Reichstein was born in Halle/Saale. He began his career as a gardener. he pursued studies in landscape architecture at the university of Dresden TU located in Dresden between 1982 and 1984. Following this, he pursued studies in the fine arts at the sculptor’s section of the art school at Dresden Hochschule for Bildende Kunste Dresden. The professor who taught him was Professor Klaus Schwabe. He received his diploma in the year 1990.
He began working as a freelance artist in Dresden. From 1992 until 1997 , he traveled to Ghana during three consecutive months each year to visit a brass casting village close to Kumasi. Employing the lost-wax technique, he created small , abstracted and decorative figures. The objects made him famous in Saxony.
Thomas Reichstein was 2000–2012 Chairman of the Saxon artists association and 1997–2012 board member of the Federal Dresden artists. 2005 he was Member of the Board of the Association of Visual Artists (BBK) of Germany. Since 2012, Thomas Reichstein is the CEO of the New Saxon Art Association. Thomas Reichstein is father of four children.
