Quasthoff received his Grammy Award for Best Classical Vocal Performance in 2000 for his collaboration together with Anne Sofie von Otter of Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn, as well as members of the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Claudio Abbado. He was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Classical Vocal Performance for the second time in 2004. The reason was Schubert: The Lieder of the Orchestra, which Quasthoff sang with von Otter and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe directed by Abbado. Quasthoff received the Grammy Award for Best Classical Vocal Performance for the third time in 2006 along with Rainer Kussmaul and with the Berlin Baroque Soloists and the RIAS Chamber Choir for recordings of J. S. Bach: Cantatas.

Quasthoff’s career in music was launched in 1988, when he was awarded his first prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich receiving praise from the baritone Dietrich Fisher-Dieskau. In 1995 the year he performed his American debut at the Oregon Bach Festival at the invitation of the artistic director Helmuth Rilling; in 1998 Quasthoff was among the performers for the festival’s world premiere performance of Penderecki’s Credo the recording of which was awarded the Grammy Award for best choral recording. He staged his operatic stage first appearance as Don Fernando in Beethoven’s Fidelio at the Salzburg Festival with the conductor Simon Rattle.

Quasthoff’s recordings from Brahms, Liszt and Schubert with the pianist Justus Zeyen were nominated to the Grammy in 2000 and 2001.

In 2005, Quasthoff received Germany’s Great Cross of Merit. In 2009, he was awarded the Herbert von Karajan Music Prize. That same year he was awarded the Gold Medal for outstanding musicianship by the Royal Philharmonic Society.
