Thomas Maissen (born 23 October 1962 in Zurich, Switzerland) is a professor of modern-day history in Heidelberg University and co-director of the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”. As of September 2013 , he has been removed as director at the German Historical Institute in Paris.

Maissen studies Historiography’s history, as well as the history of political concepts as well as constitutional and political history focusing on the republican tradition, (religious) beliefs, identities of collectives and representations. Additionally he is fascinated by theories of historical concepts, Swiss history, and the study of the history of education. His dissertation Maissen studied what Italians of the Renaissance interpreted the French past. His dissertation was a study of “The Birth of the Republic. Concept of the State and Representation in the Early Modern Period of the Swiss Confederation”. The publication “Schweizer Heldengeschichten” (2015) the author compared the debates on politics by right-wing Swiss politician Christoph Blocher and Ueli Maurer and the situation of research into historical events. The study sparked a lively controversy in Swiss media, and was referred to by”the “Swiss Historikerstreit”.

He was appointed in September 2013 as the was the first director who was not German to lead the German Historical Institute in Paris (GHIP). Under his direction the GHIP expanded its geographical scope and began a collaboration with Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar by establishing the group of research “La bureaucratisation des societes africaines” in 2015.

The son of a Finnish mother as well as a Swiss father Maissen was a student of history as well as Latin and philosophy , in Basel, Rome, and Geneva. He finished his dissertation at the age of 23 under supervision under the guidance of Swiss historian Hans Rudolf Guggisberg. After that, he was an assistant professor in the Chair of Early Modern History at the University of Potsdam. From 1996 until 1999, he was awarded fellowships for his rehabilitation by the Swiss National Science Foundation and other sources. Additionally, he was the director and founder for the Heidelberg Graduate School for Humanities and Social Sciences from 2007 until 2012. From 2008 until 2013 Maissen coordinated the joint master’s degree offered by Heidelberg University and the Ecole des hautes etudes en sciences sociales (EHESS). The year 2008 was the first time Maissen joined the founders and primary researchers in the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”. From 2009 until 2013, he was an active chairman of the committee, and then in 2013, he was co-director of the cluster. In 2009 the year he was a guest professor at EHESS and in 2010 , he was an invited scholar with the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton, New Jersey. Additionally, from 2009 until 2011 the professor was a member of the seminar on research “Legitimitat und Religion” at the Centre for Religion, Economy and Politics which is a joint venture between the Universities of Basel, Lausanne, Lucerne and Zurich as well as at the Collegium Helveticum. From 2012 until 2013 the fellow was the Marsilius-Kolleg at Heidelberg University.
