He was previously the chairman of the Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee. DiNapoli is an Democrat born and bred on Long Island. He lives in Long Island’s Village of Great Neck Plaza. The village’s mayor in November of 2014 was elected to another term as a reelection candidate, with him leading the state-wide ticket and receiving the highest percentage of votes. He was easily elected in November of 2018, receiving 64.9 percent.
He graduated in 1988 and was awarded an advanced master’s degree in human resource management from the New School’s Graduate School of Management and Urban Professions.
DiNapoli applied to be State Comptroller to replace Alan Hevesi, who resigned in December 2006. He was interviewed by a panel of two former State Comptrollers, a former New York City Comptroller and a group of legislators on January 24, 2007. DiNapoli was not amongst the three finalists recommended by the review panel. On February 7, 2007, in a joint session of the New York State Legislature, DiNapoli was elected as New York State Comptroller, succeeding Alan Hevesi by a vote of 150 to 56.
In November 2010, he narrowly won reelection. DiNapoli claimed victory early the morning of November 3, and Harry Wilson conceded later in the morning.
DiNapoli was an assistant to Assemblyman Angelo F. Orazio. He was also District Representative to the Congressman Robert J. Mrazek. DiNapoli was an elected Member of the New York State Assembly from 1987 until 2007, serving at the 187th 188th 191st, 189th, 190th and 193rd 194th, 194th, 19th, 195th and the 197th New York State Legislatures. He was a member of the 16th District within Northwest Nassau County. DiNapoli was later elected as the Chairman of the Nassau County Democratic Committee. The year 2001 was the time he was unable to win his Democratic election to run for Nassau County Executive to Thomas Suozzi who won the race. in 2006 DiNapoli ran for the position of lieutenant governor. However, he pulled from the contest following attorney general Eliot Spitzer, the party’s main contender for governor, selected Senate Minority Leader David Paterson as his running partner.
