He began playing golf at the age of five, but also played hockey and tennis. He started participating internationally in golf competitions at thirteen years old. He was a student at The Topsportschool Vlaanderen in Hasselt until 2012. In 2009, at sixteen years old Detry was the winner of his first prize in the Dutch Junior Open the competition for young golfers less than 21 years old.
Detry made the transition to professional, and began participating in the Challenge Tour in 2016. He qualified for the cut in the first 10 events he competed in which culminated in his victory in the 2015 Bridgestone Challenge. In winning it was his first time to beat the record for the lowest-under-par finishing in the history of the Challenge Tour (29 under par that was which was set by Ivo Giner) and established a new record for the biggest distance ever recorded in the Challenge Tour – 12 strokes ahead of the second-place winner. Also, he broke the record for the course for the venue at Heythrop Park Resort with his first round of 60 (12 under par).
On 24 November 2018, Detry won the 2018 World Cup of Golf with partner Thomas Pieters, representing Belgium, at Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia.
Alongside fellow golfer and great colleague Thomas Pieters, Detry studied Business Management at the University of Illinois from 2012 until 2016. He was awarded by the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2013, and was named in 2015, the Big Ten Golfer of the Year in 2015. He was a representative of Europe at the Palmer Cup in 2014 and the Palmer Cup in 2015. He was voted the top Belgian amateur golfer in 2013 as well as 2015.
