He was among the last three men to see Scott alive within reach of his goal , and only a few months later he went back to the ice to bury Scott’s frozen body. It was during the return to base camp that Crean performed the greatest single-handed act of bravery in the history of Antarctic exploration.
How did Tom Crean survive?
On 19 January 1915 the expedition’s ship, the Endurance, was beset in the Weddell Sea pack ice. In the early efforts to free her, Crean narrowly escaped being crushed by a sudden movement in the ice. The ship drifted in the ice for months, eventually sinking on 21 November.
