Thangam Elizabeth Rachel Debbonaire (nee Singh; born 3 August 1966) is a British Labour Party politician serving as the Shadow Secretary of State of Housing until 2020. She was elected as a Member of the Parliament (MP) to Bristol West at the 2015 general election, where she defeated incumbent Liberal Democrat MP Stephen Williams. After her election Debbonaire was diagnosed breast cancer. She did not participate in a parliamentary vote between June 2015 and March 2016.
Prior to becoming an MP, she played professionally as a classical cellist, and was a part of her orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. She was National Children’s Officer with the Women’s Aid Federation of England and was transferred into St Werburghs in Bristol in 1991. She then became an Accreditation officer, Fundraising manager and later National Research Manager at Respect which is an anti-domestic-violence organization..
At the 2015 general election, Debbonaire was selected as a Labour candidate via an all-women shortlist for the constituency of Bristol West. She was elected with a majority of 5,673 votes, defeating incumbent Liberal Democrat MP Stephen Williams, who finished in third place after the Green Party.
