Tessa Hadley was born in Bristol in 1956. She was the daughter of Geoff Nichols. Geoff Nichols was a teacher and amateur jazz trumpeter while her mother Mary was an artist who took a break from her profession. The brother of her father is writer Peter Nichols. She graduated with a BA in English (1978) and then the PGCE degree at Clare College, University of Cambridge and taught for a short time at a comprehensive college before having a child. In 1982, she was married Eric Hadley, a teacher writer, lecturer, and playwright and the couple moved to Cardiff in the UK, in which Eric Hadley taught at Cardiff University as well as the University of Wales Institute. The couple has three sons in the same household and three stepsons. In this time, Hadley completed several novels but was unable to get a publisher. She she also co-authored two short stories collections for children, with her husband.
