The 21st of February, 2012 Van Akkeren defeated Mayor Bob Ryan in the mayoral recall election. In March of 2012 Van Akkeren was sworn in as the new Mayor of Sheboygan. After serving the last month of Mayor Ryan’s previous 4-year tenure, Van Akkeren lost his election bid in favor of Sheboygan County Supervisor Mike Vandersteen in a vote of 4,059 votes to 3,862. In November 2014 Terry Katsma defeated Van Akkeren to win his Wisconsin State Assembly seat.
On November 2nd in 2010, Van Akkeren was defeated for election by Mike Endsley.

Van Akkeren graduated from Sheboygan North High School and then went into Lakeshore Technical College. He worked as an engineer technician as well as a manufacturer of tooling and tools. He was also a member of the Sheboygan County Board of Supervisors. From 2002 to 2010 Van Akkeren served in the Wisconsin State Assembly, as an Democrat representative of the 26th Assembly District.
Van Akkeren unsuccessfully ran for the office of Mayor of Sheboygan in 2009. He was defeated by Alderman Bob Ryan 3,968 votes to 5,891 votes. He was back in the 2012 election when an election for recall was held.
