He is most well-known for his work on the Holocaust memorial project Stolpersteine as well as for the fact that he has a “reality check” – since 2012, he’s carried a Kippah while in public.

On the 1st of December 2012 Swartzberg started his project to wear a kippah in the outside of his home and his Jewish community. His goal is to fight the stigma of antisemitism as well as to determine what Germany’s public opinion is about Jews. Contrary to what many people believe His experience has been positive. The fact that he displayed “civil courage” led to one of his kippots being chosen for inclusion into the collections of the Museum of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn.

Swartzberg’s pro bono collection of activities is comprised of his work for Munich’s Reformed Jewish congregation Beth Shalom. He led the project that aimed to construct a synagogue in accordance to the plans drawn up by Daniel Libeskind. He was now in charge of public relations on behalf of the initiative. He was elected in 2011 to be the Munich’s section of the Stolpersteine Movement. Since then, he’s been the leader of the campaign to get Munich to remove its prohibition on these plaques that honor those who died during the Nazis. Munich is among the few cities in Europe that have a ban on this type of commemoration.

Swartzberg was born living in New York City prior to moving with his family to Bihar, India, where his father, who was a cultural anthropologist, conducted research on village life on a permanent basis. In India the teen was a student at an Indian Jesuit Boarding school. After attending Brandeis University and in Paris for a short time after 1973, the student went on into the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where was awarded an B.A. In 1976.
