He resigned in the beginning of 2004 because of the injury. He returned for his participation in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, where he finished seventh in the standing shot put event, and was the oldest Australian Commonwealth Games athlete. In his farewell dinner in 2004 Chris Nunn, Head Coach of the Australian Athletics team at the Sydney Games, said “Whilst you may have travelled thousands of miles in economy class, your contribution has always been first class”.
The year 1988 was the first time Giddy was awarded the Advance Australia Award. In 2000, Giddy was awarded the Australian Sports Medal. In 2000 was the year he was the bearer of the Sydney Olympic torch. He was also awarded the Australia Day award and was granted keys to Kempsey Town. Kempsey. He was among three Paralympians who fought for the safety of workers for WorkCover both before and after during the 2000 Summer Paralympics. Terence “Terry” Giddy (born 2 April 1950) is an Australian Paralympic athlete with paraplegia and has was awarded six medals during six Paralympics.
Giddy’s first competition at the national level took place at that of the National Games in 1969, and his first international contest included the Commonwealth Paraplegic Games in Edinburgh where he was awarded three gold medals as well as the silver medal. In 1972, at the Heidelberg Paralympics Giddy won an award of silver in the 100-meter men’s Wheelchair 4 race, and took part in the Australia wheelchair basketball national team. He was a participant during the 1974 Commonwealth Paraplegic Games in Dunedin, New Zealand,. He was chosen, but did not compete at the 1976 Toronto Paralympics due to illness and did not take part at the 1988 Arnhem Paralympics. He took home an gold medal during the 1984 New-York/Stoke Mandeville Paralympics for the men’s Discus 4 competition, winning a silver medal for the event in 1988 at the Seoul Paralympics and winning a silver medal at the Men’s Discus event THW6 and bronze medals in the men’s Shot Put THW6 event at the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics and an award of bronze for the men’s Shot Put F55 event at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics.
