Teresa Pike Tomlinson (born February 19th 1965) is an American politician who been the 69th Mayor in Columbus, Georgia elected in 2010. On the 3rd January of 2011 she was officially sworn in as the city’s first woman mayor.
During her term, Columbus, Georgia, was named one of the 2016 and 2017’s top 50 cities to run in America. The administration she led decreased crime by 39.3 percent from the peak in 2009, which included the 41.2 percentage reduction in property crime, and a drop of 15% in violent crimes. Under her direction she led the Columbus Consolidated Government balanced the budget for the first time in the past 16 years, with reserves and offered municipal and county-related services for a sensible cost of $1300 per person. Tomlinson introduced reforms to the city’s pension system which saved taxpayers $39.9 million and increasing the amount of funds for the General Government plan to over 90%, while also preserving the value of the Defined Benefit Plan for Employees. Reform was also introduced within the Muscogee County Prison as part of The Rapid Resolution Initiative, which made it easier to dispose of unindicted prisoners at the Muscogee County Jail. Columbus was awarded an award from Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government Bright Ideas Award to be awarded for his Save-A-Pet Plan which reduced the animal euthanasia rate from 80% to 20 percent in 2010 to just 20 percent in 2016, as well as increased the number of adoptions by three the number of. The Tax Allocation Districts (TADs) were established to help revitalize previously neglected areas, such as City Village and the Liberty District. New trails for walking and biking were built and referred to as The Dragonfly Trails, to create 60 miles of trails that are connected all over the city, with streets and trails in previously neglected areas. Being a good steward of this amazing city has always been my primary objective. While in the batter’s box, I keep my eye on the ball, not on the stands.” Tomlinson completed her second term on January 6, 2019. On January 7, 2019, Tomlinson joined the law firm Hall Booth Smith, P.C., as a partner specializing in complex litigation, crisis management and strategic solutions. Tomlinson is running in the Democratic primary to challenge incumbent Senator David Perdue in the 2020 United States Senate election in Georgia.
In 2015, following the shock announcement of possible closure of her college of choice, Sweet Briar College in Virginia Mayor Tomlinson joined forces with thousands of alumni across the country to collect $28.5 million over 110 days. She also converted over $12 million in cash within 70 days to meet the terms of the court-approved settlement. This helped save the college and keep the doors open. Today, it continues to thrive in the present. Tomlinson was the primary witness in the case that was a success at the Virginia Supreme Court and was involved in discussions with the Virginia Attorney General’s Office regarding the future of the institution. Mayor Tomlinson made his 2015.
