Teresa Carpio (born 30 September 1956 in Hong Kong) is a Hong Kong English pop and Cantopop actor, singer as well as a singing teacher. She is a singer who has been able to enjoy a huge following throughout Hong Kong and other countries especially in the 1970s and the 1980s. The mother is actor and singer T.V. Carpio. Carpio is best known for her Cantonese hit songs Jia Ru (If), Reng Ran Ji De Ge Yi Ci (I Still Remember That Time), Mei Tou Bu Zai Zhou (Sukiyaki) and He Bi Fang Qi (Why Give Up?) as well as Zhen Ai (True Love).
Due to the increasing appeal that came with Cantopop, Carpio started to record in Cantonese as well as English and remained popular despite growing competition from newer stars, including Anita Mui. Carpio extended her career into acting, appearing in a variety of films. She also was a candidate for the lead role on Miss Saigon, though this ended up going the way of Lea Salonga. Carpio was no fan of live musicals as she played the lead part during the 1979 San Jose, California production of the stage musical City of Broken Promises, inspired by the novel written by Austin Coates, a story that was set in Macau that won the award for the prize for the Best Original Musical.
Carpio began teaching in 1991, when Sandy Lam came to her and asked her to teach her in preparation for her concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum. After that, many other singers followed, names such as Sammi Cheng, Wong Cho Lam, Cecilia Cheung, Joey Yung, Gigi Leung, Alex To, Edmund Leung, Twins, Jade Kwan and many more.
Prior to her appearance on Singer 2017, on 20 August 2016, she appeared as a guest singer on the finals of Crossover Singer 2016 for the performance of runner-up Wong Cho Lam (who sung a version of The Prayer.)
In the years 1975 and onwards Carpio featured on her own TV Variety show on Hong Kong, on which she appeared both as a solo performer and with her siblings. She released numerous albums from Hong Kong from 1976 onwards Six albums she released under EMI were certified gold with covers in English of western classics as well as an album with George Lam. She was a frequent TV host throughout Hong Kong, in the latter part of the 1970s.

Carpio started her professional career as a young star who won Hong Kong’s inaugural Amateur Talent Quest in 1963 at the age 6. At the age of 11 she declined an offer to study at St Paul’s Convent to work at the first position she had at Tahiti which her dad was also employed. After that, she was employed at clubs till she moved into Japan to spend a whole year. It was there that she met Shintaro Katsu , who helped her out during her time in Japan. Her first single was released from Japan in 1971. It was called Ainoko Mary (Hun Xie Er mari).
Carpio is the name that has been used on 25 of her albums up to this point and has recorded six live performances. The first album, Teresa Carpio, was released in 1975. She then immediately followed it up with five solo albums with EMI and an album of duets together with George Lam. In 1981, she joined WEA and released a Cantonese album. In 1983, she established her own record label, TV Records, which released three additional Cantonese albums, which together alongside her WEA album are among her most well-known songs. Since then, she has released numerous Live CDs, DVDs, as well with a handful of recordings in studio.
She has appeared in 13 movies in total, starting in 1984 with a lead role in 開心鬼 (Happy Ghost), where she also sang the theme song. She is more well known for her later movies where she often was famous for small roles that became extremely popular, such as 2003’s 六樓后座 (Sixth Floor Rear Flat) where she sang part of 海闊天空 (Boundless Oceans, Vast Skies), accompanying herself on keyboards.
