Teresa Bellanova was born near Brindisi, Apulia in 1958. When she was just fifteen years of age, she began being employed as an agriculture worker and then joined the trade union of the left CGIL and was the regional coordinator for Federbraccianti. She was employed in the south-east region of Bari before moving in the direction of Lecce to fight the caporalato, a gangmaster system where people, mostly migrants are recruited illegally to work in agriculture for a small or no wage and in conditions that resemble slavery.

Bellanova was again elected during the 2013 general election. On the 28th of February, 2014, she was appointed Undersecretary to Labour policies in the Matteo Renzi. On the 29th of January, 2016, she was named Deputy Minister for Economic Development, a position she held in both government that included Renzi as well as Paolo Gentiloni. In the general election in 2018 that was marked by a strong performance of populist parties and a strong showing by populist parties, she was elected to the Italian Senate for the first time. She ran in the multi-member seat of Emilia-Romagna.

In 2005, she was elected to the National Council of Democrats of the Left. On April 22, 2006, her first election was in the Chamber of Deputies within the left-of-center The Olive Tree government of Romano Prodi. In the year following she became one of the founding members of the Democratic Party, and was consequently re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the second time in 2008’s election. As of the 21st May 2008, she was part of the Commission for Public and Private Work.

Teresa Bellanova (born 17 August 1958) is an Italian politician and trade unionist, and is Minister of Agriculture under the administration under Giuseppe Conte. In 2018 Bellanova was elected to the Italian Senate for the Democratic Party (PD), however, in the year she became a member of Italia Viva (IV), the new Matteo Renzi. Bellanova was also an elected participant in the Italian Chamber of Deputies from the year 2006 until 2018.

The year 1988 saw her appointed to the position as Provincial General Secretary of the FLAI (Federation of Agro-industrial Workers) for Lecce. In 1996, she became the general secretary of FILTEA (Italian Federation of Footwear, Textile and Clothing) the post that she held until 2000 after which she joined in the FILTEA National Secretariat with responsibility for Southern Italy policies, industrial policies as well as labor market policies and professional education.

In August 2019 tensions grew within the populist government, leading to the issuing of a motion of no-confidence on Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte by the League. After Conte’s resignation, the national board of the PD officially opened to the possibility of forming a new cabinet in a coalition with the M5S, based on pro-Europeanism, green economy, sustainable development, fight against economic inequality and a new immigration policy. The party also accepted that Conte may continue at the head of a new government, and on 29 August President Sergio Mattarella formally invested Conte to do so. On 5 September 2019 Bellanova was appointed Minister of Agriculture.
