He was the son of Rhousdy Soeriaatmadja (father) and Siti Syarifah. As a child , he was fond of watching films at home, like films from Star Wars and James Bond franchises. In an interview with Jakarta-based tabloid Tabloid Nova, he mentioned watching between three and four films every day. In 1991, he had completed the first screenplay Desember (December) and after having watched the film of Quentin Tarantino Reservoir Dogs in 1992, was inspired to get into film. He wrote numerous screenplays while he was studying in Newport University in South Wales (now the University of South Wales) and two of them was later adapted for film.
Soeriatmadja made his feature film first film, Banyu Biru (Blue Banyu) in 2005. The film was a follow-up to an employee of a store on a trip of self- discovery, was the budget of Rp. 5 billion. In the case of Banyu Biru Soeriaatmadja intentionally hid the location. The year-end analysis of Indonesian films published in The Jakarta Post described the film as “possibly the bravest and most original release of [March], if not the year.” In the following year, he released Ruang (Room) which was the love story of Winky Wiryawan Luna Maya, and Slamet Rahardjo. The film was moderately successful and earned nine nominations for the 2006 Indonesian Film Festival, including the award for Best Director.
After completing the master’s program at the University of Britain, Soeriaatmadja returned to Indonesia and worked for a full year at the company that made soft drinks. With the money he had saved, he started work for his very first film named Culik (Kidnap) that was about the story of an Indonesian employee , who abducted the Australian boss after he was fired and he also received funding via the Gothenburg Film Festival in Sweden. The film premiered during the year 2000 Jakarta International Film Festival. Through the production the film Culik that Soeriaatmadja got to know director Mira Lesmana and Riri Riza who helped ease his way into the business. To build up his experience Soeriaatmadja began working on music videos and TV commercials.

Teddy Soeriaatmadja (born 7 February 1975) is an Indonesian film director. The director was raised in Japan and trained by his parents in Britain, Soeriaatmadja made his film debut in 2000 in his short movie Culik (Kidnap) and it was then followed with Banyu Biru (Blue Banyu), his debut feature film. Since then, Soeriaatmadja has directed a number of films, and two earned the director a nomination to be the Best Director in the Indonesian Film Festival.
Soeriaatmadja has released Badai Pasti Berlalu, a remake of Teguh Karya’s 1977 film with the same title, in 2007. The film, starring Vino G. Bastian, Winky Wiryawan, as well as Raihaanun was about the story of a woman’s struggles after being left by her fiancé. The film’s director, Soeriaatmadja attempted to change some aspects of the original film and the source material to make it more appropriate to the current decade including the character’s diabetes but was turned down by the author who wrote the original script, Marga T. Shortly after the release of the film, he was married to its main character, Raihaanun. In May 2012, they have one daughter, Millan Haruna Soeriaatmadja, and another is to be born in June.
In 2009 Soeriaatmadja directed Ruma Maida (Maida’s House), with a screenplay by Ayu Utami. The film, which detailed a woman’s struggle to save a historic house from a developer while showing the life of the house’s original owner, garnered a Best Director nomination for Soeriaatmadja at the 2009 Indonesian Film Festival. Two years later he released Lovely Man, which followed a woman’s search for her father and their interactions after she discovered he was a transsexual. He was quoted in the Jakarta Globe as saying that he did not want to portray transsexuals as comedic fodder, an approach common in Indonesian films.
