Kikuchi was a part of the two “ad limina” visits: one was presented for Pope Benedict XVI on 14 December 2007 and the second was presented for Pope Francis on 20 March 2015. Kikuchi attended the beatification of Takayama Ukon, in Osaka in 2017, and suggested the late samurai’s story to be “a model for all” as he “renounced privileges and wealth for the faith”. Pope Francis appointed Kikuchi as the the Archbishop of Tokyo on the 25th of October, 2017. Kikuchi was inaugurated in his new episcopal office on December 16, 2017.

Isao Kikuchi (Ju Di Gong , Kikuchi Isao, born 1 November 1958) is a Japanese Roman Catholic prelate and professed member of the Divine Word Missionaries who has been The Archbishop of Tokyo since 2017. He previously worked in the missionaries from Ghana located in Western Africa. Prior to his appointment as the Archbishop of Tokyo He had been serving as Bishop of Niigata since 2004 , when the first time he was appointed as an archbishop.

Kikuchi was professed to the Divine Word Missionaries in March 1985 prior to being ordained into the priesthood March 15th, 1986. After his ordination, in 1986 the priest was sent into West Africa where he served in the missionaries in Ghana. He worked at Koforidua in the role of a Pastor prior to being chosen as the head of the order’s provincial in 1999, back in Japan. Pope John Paul II appointed him the bishop of Niigata on the 29th of April, 2004. He received his episcopal consecration as a bishop 20 September 2004 at the Salle of Seishin Girls’ High School in Niigata by Peter Takeo Okada. Rafael Masahiro Umemura and Marcellino Taiji Tani were co-consecrators.

Kikuchi spoke on evangelization during the visit of Cardinal Fernando Filoni to Japan in September 2017 and expressed his hope that evangelization efforts on the part of the faithful would be “humble” but bold and direct.
