She was a champion Mountain Bike (MTB) racer. Later, she played wheelchair tennis along with wheelchair basketball, for Canada. Her surname is known as “Yaw-ness” but for obvious reasons, it is frequently pronounced “lanes” as in the sort of division of pathways.

The first time she raced was according to her website , she started racing in 1993 she was age 16. She approached her BMX team manager from Haro Designs who sponsored her numerous times to give it a go and he finally agreed. However, during the mai 2007 Mountain Bike Action interview it was Haro Bicycles who suggested to give it a go.
In 1993, when she was in the midst of racing BMX in 1993 for Haro Bicycles, she asked the company sponsor for a mountain bike , and also to participate in the mountain bike race. She was impressed and quickly moved to BMX to MTB and cross-country Dual Slalom and after Dual Slalom was eliminated by NORBA the events that are 4-Cross Downhill. In her time on mountain bikes, she earned the nickname “T”, the first letter of her birth name. Contrary to BMX she made the transition to professional racing in the year 1996. The next day she was doing great on the pro circuit however it wasn’t until 1999 when she won her first championship. In the now-defunct Dual Slalom down hill event in the ESPN Winter Extreme Games (also known as the Winter “X” Games), Tara took a Gold medal. She would later collect 14 more medals over the following 7 years in her professional career, including five championships. In this period, she also had numerous injuries like ruptured lungs, and a fractured foot. In September 2007, she suffered the most devastating of them all was a collision that left her completely paralyzed from her lower part of her body. She is in intensive rehab and despite the diagnosis of a physician that she will never be capable of walking again she is determined not to just walk once more, but also get back on a bicycle and even racing. The final chapter of her racing career likely to not yet written in the light of this kind of determination.
On September 1, 2007, Llanes crashed at Beaver Creek, Colorado, host to the Jeep King of the Mountain Finale. The accident happened on the second to last straight down the Dual Slalom course as she raced head-to-head against Jill Kintner in the semifinals. Llanes hit an obstacle wrong and the bicycle landed nose first on the ground. She was thrown over the handlebars and onto her head and then landed on her back, suffering massive and severe lower back trauma, suffering a C-7 fracture and L-1 damage to her vertebrae, and paralyzing her lower extremities. She was first rushed to Vail Valley Medical Center and then was airlifted to Denver Health Hospital. She underwent seven hours of surgery but still had no feeling from the waist down. According to the surgeons who worked on her, the condition is most likely permanent. Llanes recalls the moment of the accident:
