Born on the 2nd of January, 1962 in Hili which is a border town in Balurghat in the Dakshin Dinajpur district in the Indian state of West Bengal to Kalachand Kundu and the couple Dipali, Tapas Kumar Kundu graduated in agricultural sciences (BSc honors) at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viwavidyalaya, in 1986. He obtained his master’s degree in biochemistry at University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore in 1989. He won the gold medal for being at the top of his master’s exam. He was accepted for graduate studies in the Indian Institute of Science in 1990 and earned the PhD under the direction from M. R. S. Rao in

1995. He was awarded his dissertation, Zinc-Metalloprotein The Nature of Rat Spermatidal Protein TP2 as well as its interactions with DNA. After a brief time in the National Institute of Genetics, Japan between 1995 and 1996 as a foreign visiting research associate, he carried out his postdoctoral research in the Laboratory of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Rockefeller University during 1996-99. After returning to India the following year, he joined the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research in the Molecular Biology and Genetics Unit which he joined as the assistant professor of the year 2005 and leads the Transcription and Disease Laboratory of the institute in the role of an JNCASR Gold Jubillee Professor since the year

Kundu is a life-long member and former vice-president of the Society of Biological Chemists, India and currently serves as its president. He is a nominee member of the American Chemical Society and American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as well as a participant in the American Society for Microbiology. He was one of the biologists who created the Chemical Biology Society, India of the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology in

2013. He is its secretary. As an adjunct professor of the Special Centre for Molecular Medicine of Jawaharlal Nehru University, he was a member of the Reader Panel of Nature and was a former member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Biological Chemistry (June 2011 to September 2016).

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) granted to him with the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize which is among the most prestigious Indian science prizes in 2005. He was awarded the National Bioscience Award for Career Development (N-BIOS Prize) from the Department of Biotechnology, the same year. Three years after, he was chosen as a finalist for the National Academy of Sciences, India-Reliance Industries Platinum Jubilee Award in 2008 for his contribution to biological sciences. The year 2011 was the time he won the G. D. Birla Award for Scientific Research of the K. K.
