The governor nominated Arnold Schwarzenegger for California’s highest post of judicial on the 22nd of July in 2010, and confirmed in her post through California people on November 2nd, 2010 she was sworn into office on the 3rd of January 2011. Prior to her current position she had been as a judge on California’s trial and appellate courts. The first Filipino American and the second woman to hold the position of the California’s chief justice.

During her time on the appellate court, Cantil-Sakauye has served as: a member of the Judicial Council, where she was vice chair of the Rules and Projects Committee; chair of the Advisory Committee on Financial Accountability and Efficiency for the Judicial Branch; co-chair of the Judicial Recruitment and Retention Working Group; and a member of the California Commission on Impartial Courts. She has served as President of the Anthony M. Kennedy American Inns of Court, an organization promoting civility, ethics, and professionalism in the practice of law. Beginning in 2007, she also served as a Special Master, selected by the Supreme Court to hear disciplinary proceedings before the Commission on Judicial Performance.
On July 21, 2010, Schwarzenegger nominated Cantil-Sakauye, at the time a Republican, to succeed retiring Chief Justice Ronald M. George on the California Supreme Court. On August 25, 2010, the three-member California Commission on Judicial Appointments unanimously approved her nomination as the next chief justice of California. In the November 2010 general elections, voters retained her for a 12-year term as Chief Justice.
The year 1988 was the time that Cantil was dismissed from the District Attorney’s Office to become a Deputy Legal Secretary for the Governor George Deukmejian. The following one year Deukmejian was appointed Cantil as an deputy Legislative Secretary.

In Sacramento, California, as Tani Gorre Cantil, she grew up as a child in her home in the Land Park neighborhood of Sacramento. She graduated in 1977. obtained an honorary diploma in high school at C. K. McClatchy High School and, in 1978, she earned her Associate of Arts degree from Sacramento City College, where she competed in tennis and was awarded awards for debate. The year was 1980 when she received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the University of California, Davis. The following year, she was awarded the Juris Doctor degree from UC Davis School of Law. She is of mixed heritage. Her father, born in Hawaii, Clarence, was of Filipino and Portuguese origin, and the mother of her, Mary Gorre, was Filipino.
After graduating of the law faculty in 1984 Cantil could not find employment in the law and so she was a dealer in blackjack within Reno, Nevada. At time it was reported that it was reported that the Sacramento County Public Defender’s Office did not want to hire her due to her young age. In the same year, the Deputy District Attorney Russell Hom (a future Sacramento County Superior Court Judge) was recruited by Cantil to join the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
In 1990, Deukmejian appointed her as a Judge of the Sacramento Municipal Court. In 1997, Governor Pete Wilson appointed her as a Judge of the Sacramento County Superior Court. She served there until 2005, when Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed her as an Associate Justice of the California Third District Court of Appeal to succeed Daniel Kolkey. In the November 7, 2006, election she was retained by the voters.
