Talat Xhaferi Biography

Talat Xhaferi is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on April 15, 1962 in Gostivar, North Macedonia. Xhaferi is an ethnic Albanian was born on April 15th, 1962, in the town of Forino close to Gostivar, SR Macedonia, SFR Yugoslavia. He was a pupil at the his primary education in the community of Cegrane and continued his secondary education at Belgrade Military High School. He was a student at the Military Academy of the Land Army Infantry of the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) in Belgrade and Sarajevo and was a specialist in staff and command duties in the Military Academy “General Mihailo Apostolski” in Skopje. From 1985 until 1991, he was an JNA officer, and from 1992 until 2001, an officer in the Army of the Republic of Macedonia.

In 2012, Xhaferi was a household name for his long speeches, which he employed as a filibuster tactic to block the approval of a law for veterans that would have given advantages to Macedonian veterans of war, while exempting veterans who were UCK fighters. He obstructed the draft at the commission level through “reading poetry, citing foreign literature and reports on Macedonia, mumbling or simply remaining silent, waiting for the time to pass”.

In April 2017 Xhaferi was elected President of the Macedonian parliament, supported by a coalition of Albanian-minority parties and the opposition social-democratic SDSM party, sparking riots in the parliament building. The VMRO-DPMNE party labeled this move as a coup. Subsequently, demonstrators broke into the parliament building, beating journalists and MPs, and had to be cleared by the police.

On 26 November 2019, an earthquake struck Albania. Xhaferi was part of a delegation of Albanian politicians from North Macedonia visiting the earthquake epicentre that expressed their condolences to Albanian president Ilir Meta.

Xhaferi was elected for the first time to the Macedonian Parliament in 2002, representing his DUI party. From 2004 to 2006 Xhaferi was a Deputy Minister of Defence. From 2008 until 2013 Xhaferi worked as a Macedonian MP in the DUI party, which is allied with the conservative VMRO-DPMNE.

Talat Xhaferi (Macedonian: Talat Dzhaferi , [ta’lat dafe’ri] born on 15 April, 1962) is a Macedonian politician, and the current president of the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia. The politician was the minister of Defense.

In the course of the 2001 insurgency during which ethnic Albanian militants targeted police forces Xhaferi began his career as an officer of the senior rank within the ARM who was the commander of troops in the Tetovo barracks. On April 28th which was that was also the anniversary that the Vejce massacre the barracks was under his command as barracks commander. A few days later, he resigned in order to be a part of the National Liberation Army (NLA) which was an Albanian rebel group. He became the head for the 116th Brigade with the nickname of “commander Forino”, from his hometown of birth. Later, he was amnestied in accordance with the Ohrid agreement.

In 2013 Xhaferi was nominated by DUI for Minister of Defense in the Cabinet of Nikola Gruevski, after the resignation of the DUI party member Fatmir Besimi. The appointment of Xhaferi triggered protests by both Macedonian (in particular retired general Stojance Angelov of the pro-veteran Dignity opposition party) and Albanian citizens. Xhaferi stated that his goal was to make the armed forces “a symbol of coexistence, tolerance and respect for differences”.
