Tal Shaked eventually quit the sport of chess in competition, however the Blitz chess on the internet. His final competition that he participated in took place at that of the FIDE World Chess Championship 1999 He had taken the decision to quit the game prior to the tournament because of motivation and uncertain economics of playing professionally.
As the winner at Shaked’s World Junior Championship, Shaked was invited to take part in the super-grandmaster competition at Tillburg, Holland, a field that featured World champion Garry Kasparov, future world champion Vladimir Kramnik, and super-grandmasters Peter Svidler, Peter Leko, Alexei Shirov, Judit the Polgar as well as Michael Adams. In the latter part of 1997 Shaked participated for his first FIDE World Chess Championship, winning the first round but losing the second round. The year 1998 saw Shaked reached the semi- finals in the United States Championship, defeating grandmaster Boris Gulko before losing to the eventual Champion Nick de Firmian. He enrolled in the University of Maryland, Baltimore County with an all-chess award in 1998, Shaked was able to guide UMBC to victory at the 1998 Pan-American Intercollegiate Championship as his team’s most highly rated player. Then, he moved to University of Arizona where he earned an undergraduate degree in computer science in 2002.

Shaked started playing at age seven and honed his chess skills through scholastic chess clubs from Tucson, Arizona. As as a junior, Shaked won several national academic championships which included those in 1987, including the National Primary Championship, the 1990 National Elementary Championship, the 1991 National K-8 Championship, the 1992 National K-8 Championship, the 1992 U.S. Cadet (under 16) Championship, and the 1995 U.S. Junior (under 20) Championship. He also took home his first title in the year 1995 at the National Open. Shaked took home the Laura Aspis Prize in 1991 as the top rating American chess player who was under 13 years of age and the following year he became the youngest winning the Arizona State Championship.
Shaked’s win at the 1995 US Junior Championship granted him an invitation to his 1996 U.S. Chess Championship. While he was the youngest and least rated player Shaked wowed many with his performance. He was the leader of the tournament after just eight rounds. In the year 1997, Shaked was awarded the Frank Samford fellowship, which granted him to use the funds to devote all of his time to the game of chess. In the pursuit of this possibility, Shaked obtained three grandmaster norms in the span of five months. He was officially awarded his grandmaster title. it would be 10 years before another American player was granted the title of grandmaster. A month after the three norms, Shaked was the winner of his first World Junior Championship, defeating the top seed and the future Super-Grandmaster Alexander Morozevich and scoring a total of seven wins and six draws to defeat Morozevich and the future FIDE world champion Ruslan Ponomariov, and many others.
Shaked received his masters in computer science from the University of Washington in 2004 and joined Google as a Software Engineer on 4 October 2004. On 9 March 2019 he left Google in order to lead Machine Learning and AI at Lyft. On 7 October 2019, he went back to work for Google.
