He was taught how to play shogi at the age of six from his father, and was accepted into the Japanese Shogi Association’s apprenticeship school in 2004 as a 6-kyu under the supervision of professional shogi player Terutaka Yasue . He was elevated into 1-dan at the end of 2007 before participating as a 3-dan player for the first time on April of 2008 which ended with 13 wins and five loss.
In October 2012. Nagase was the winner of his first tournament after turning professional, when he defeated Shingo Ito by 2 games to one to take home his second Kakogawa Seiryu tournament [ja] He followed that victory by beating Tetsuya Fujimori a couple of days after to win the 43rd Shinjin O [ja] with a score of 2 games 1.
In December 2017, Nagase defeated Reo Kurosawa in the 43rd Kiō challenger match to earn the right to challenge Akira Watanabe for the title. Nagase, however, was unable to capture his first major title, losing the match to Wantabe 3 games to 2 in March 2018.
Nagase has finished in the “Top 10” of the JSA’s year-end prize money and game fee rankings [ja] once since turning professional: 4th place with JPY 46,780,000 in earnings for 2019.
Nagase was awarded his JSA’s Annual Shogi Award [ja] for “Most Consecutive Games Won” in 2013 and 2011. Nagase also won the prizes in 2012 for “Best New Player” and “Best Winning Percentage” in 2012, as well as in 2020, the “Fighting Spirit” and “Most Consecutive Games Won” awards in 2020.
