Takun J is one of the most popular and richest Songwriter who was born on May 14, 1981 in Monrovia, Liberia. Jonathan Koffa (born May 14 1981) popularly known as the nickname Takun J (often shortened as Takun-J) is a Liberian musician, rapper and activist. He is considered to be one of the founders of Hipco which is a controversial music genre. In fact, the Liberian Gender Ministry designated him as one of its anti-rape advocates. Takun J’s music addresses sociopolitical concerns in Liberia. He is most famous for his songs “Who Make You Cry”, “Policeman”, “Gbagba is Corruption” and “A Song for Hawa”. Takun J dropped his debut album, The Time at the end of 2007. The second album of his studio My Way was released in December 2012.

Takun J dropped his new album My Way in December 2012. The album was recorded with Stone Gray, AB Swaray, King Brian and Rawlo. The album has guests from Nasseman, Santos, Soul Smiter Bentman the Don, Scientific, Marvalous and Ice Princess. My Way was recorded at Studio 57 and Red Eyez studios. Takun J reveals his daily issues on the album and says the songs are relevant.

On June 17, 2013, Takun J had an encounter with Edwin Snowe after narrowly escaping a head-on collision with Snowe’s vehicle. The incident between the two individuals occurred at the United Nations Drive toward the Mamba Point diplomatic community. Takun J said Snowe pulled him out of his car and punched him several times. Snowe confirmed the occurrence of the incident and admitted to punching Takun J. After the incident had died down, Takun J wrote a formal complaint to the House of Representatives of Liberia about the punches he received from Snowe.

In February 2013, Takun J released the solemn track “A Song for Hawa”; it was produced by PCI-Media Impact and addresses violence against Liberian girls and women. Takun J wrote the song after visiting a home sheltering victimized young girls. The music video for the song premiered at the UN Commission on the Status of Women. He told Mae Azango it narrates the story of a girl named Hawa, who was raped by her uncle following the death of her mother.

Takun J performs at the annual , two-day Hipco Festival in Monrovia. The 27th of July, 2012 the group performed alongside Nasseman, David Mell, Nozi and Mr. Smith at the Lone Star Cell musical concert. On the 7th of December 2013, he was a part of The second edition of the Liberia Music Festival, held at Slipway Sports Pitch. On March 15th 14th, 2014 Takun J was a part of The Holiday Beach Jam in Congo Town with J. Martins, R2Bees, Scientific, Cypha D’King, Sweetz and F.A. He is a part of UNICEF to serve as an advocate for music. The month of March, 2014 The Daily Observer reported that Takun J had signed a two-year endorsement agreement in partnership with Lonestar Cell MTN. In the course of the agreement the rapper will appear and appear on the Lonestar Cell and MTN programs.

Takun J was born Monrovia, Liberia. He grew up in Monrovia with her mother, three brothers and sisters. His father emigrated in America United States when he was four years old. He was a part of Liberia’s First and Second civil wars which ran from 1989 to 2003. As a child in the capital city of Liberia was where he played soccer, and took part in dance and talent competitions. He fell in love with music and set out to pursue an occupation in music after he graduated from high school. At 17 years old, he joined a band called Magnetic. old and joined a music group known as Magnetic. Takun J dropped his first track “We’ll Spay You” in 2005. His follow-up single “You Meaning Me” was released in the year following.

Takun J moved from refugee camps to Ghana as well as Ivory Coast with his family. The singer returned in Liberia to release his first album, The Time in 2007. The album’s title track “Policeman” is a politically-charged song that exposes corruption among police officers from The Liberian National Police; the song also makes an appeal to former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to repress corruption. The release of the song led to two arrests by the police as well as an assault. Takun J did not seem to be dissuaded from the incident and continued to perform the song on day he was released from prison. Interview with Liberian listener Takun J revealed that he was releasing “Policeman” in order to raise awareness of police negligence.

Takun J was one of the acts featured on the remix of Xpolay’s 2012 single “Pot Not Bolling”, which was produced by Yor-EL Francis and received critical acclaim in Liberia. In the aforementioned interview with the Liberian Listener, Takun J said the song was well received because of its positive messages.
