Hacene Zermani (born 1958 in Algiers, Algeria), is known under her stage name Takfarinas is an Algerian Kabyle Yal performer. Takfarinas was his name taken from the warrior from North Africa Tacfarinas who fought against the presence of Romans within Algeria. Since 1979, Takfarinas is a resident of France. His songs, however, highlight and celebrate the Kabyle tradition into which the singer was born. Takfarinas is most likely best known for his voice, which has an extensive range, as well as the ‘takfa’ instrument, which is inspired by a traditional guitar-like instrument, that he modified by adding a new neck. Each neck produces a distinctive sound, with one being feminine, while the other is more male. The takfa is now replaced by an electronic half-drum mandole. Much like the takfa it features two fingerboards. The benefit of this instrument is that it’s capable of producing the huge concert sound that he requires.

Takfarinas changed the direction of his music with the release of his debut album Paix et salut which was an ode to Algerian artists who were the victims of the oppression. In 2004 he released the album Honneur with dames.

In 1976 the year 1976, he recorded his first album with cassettes at Algiers however, his status as a musician and singer was bolstered when he recorded his debut record in France around 1979. He joined forces in 1981 and joined the group Agraw together with Boujema Semaouni. The group lasted several years. He released the albums Wa i Telha along with Arrach and Arrach in both 1986 and sold millions of copies. In 1989 He made Irgazen as well as Mi d ih, a double CDthat earned him international recognition. Then, in 1994, he came out with another album , Yebb’a Remman, which was a hit on the European charts.
In 1999, Takfarinas was awarded an award at the KORA All African Music Award in the category of Best North African Artist.
