Okabe has won five times in total World Cup victories, three of which were from flying hills. When he won his latest victory in Kuopio on the 10th of March 2009, he was at 38 years old and 135 days, the eldest ski jumper ever to take home in a World Cup competition. The record was later beat by his fellow countryman Noriaki Kasai.

Participating at the three Winter Olympics, he won two medals in the team’s big hill event of the Winter Olympics with a silver in 1994 and a gold medal in 1998.

He won a gold medal for the normal individual hill (1995) and silver medal in the team’s big hill (1997) and three bronzes on big hill for the entire team (1995 2007 and 2009).
