Taichi Nakamura was born Fuchu, Tokyo on June 1st 1988. When he was a child his family relocated often due to the work of his father. He started playing shogi at the age of four when he lived within Sapporo, Hokkaido, but initially became attracted to the idea of becoming an elite shogi player upon learning about Yoshiharu Habu being one of the first “7-crown” in professional shogi history. When Nakamura’s family relocated to Tokyo at the age of an elementary school student in the second grade and he began practicing shogi at the renowned Hachioji Shogi Club in which Habu was also studying as an infant.

After finishing high school in the month of March 2007 Nakamura was accepted into Waseda University’s School of Political Science and Economics to further his studies and also to become an shogi professional. In March of 2010, Nakamura wrote a thesis on political parties and non-affiliated voters in Japan that earned him an award to the School of Political Science and Economics. Nakamura completed his studies at Waseda in the year 2011.

Nakamura received the Japan Shogi Association Annual Shogi Awards for “Best Winning Percentage” in 2011, “Fighting-spirit” and “Most Consecutive Games Won” in 2012, and “Game of the Year” in 2013.

Nakamura’s first appearance in a major title match came in 2012 when he challenged Yoshiharu Habu for the 83rd Kisei title. Nakamura lost the match 3 games to none. In 2013, Nakamura defeated Masataka Gōda in the final of the challenger tournament of the 61st Ōza tournament to earn the right to challenge Habu for the title. Nakamura was leading the match 2 games to 1 after three games, but Habu was able to defend his title by winning the last two games.

In April of 2006, Nakamura was officially awarded professional status in April of 2006 for placing third in the 38th 3dan league, with a the total of 13 victories and five losses. Nakamura was an 11th grade junior high schooler attending Waseda Jitsugyo High School [ja] (an affiliated college associated with Waseda University) at the time.
