McNair made her professional debut in the year 1980 as a member of The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Her debut in opera in 1982 was in the role of Sandrina in Haydn’s”L’infedelta delusa” in the Mostly Mozart Festival. She was frequently seen in performances at the Vienna State Opera, the Salzburg Festival, Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, the Santa Fe Opera as well as at the San Francisco Opera, and at the Metropolitan Opera, and has been soloist with numerous important European as well as American orchestras.

Sylvia McNair (born June 23 1956) is an American opera performer and classical recitalist, who has had notable success in the Broadway and cabaret categories. McNair is a soprano and has released a number of critically acclaimed recordings and been awarded the award of two Grammy Awards.

Sylvia McNair was born in Mansfield, Ohio, the daughter of George and Marilou McNair. In her youth she took violin lessons. She initially was enrolled in the music undergraduate programme of Wheaton (Ill.) College as a major in violin and was then enticed by a violin instructor at the college to pursue a voice study in addition. She began her singing during her time at Wheaton alongside Margarita Evans. Upon discovering her voice more suitable for singing, she opted out of violin as her primary. She graduated with the Master of Music degree in 1978 at Wheaton and later earned a master of Music with distinction with distinction in the year 1983 at Indiana University (whose music school is now known as the Jacobs School of Music) in which she was a vocal instructor alongside Virginia MacWatters, John Wustman along with Virginia Zeani.

Since the late 1990s, McNair has changed the focus of her singing career to Broadway and jazz styles. In these genres she has achieved considerable critical acclaim and commercial success.
