Sylvia Eileen, Lady Hermon (nee Paisley; born 11 August 1955) is a retired Unionist politician from Northern Ireland. She was an MP (MP) in the North Down constituency in North Down from 2001 to the year 2019.

Inside the UUP, Hermon was regarded as belonging to the more liberal and socially liberal wing of the party. Hermon was described by The Guardian in 2005 as liberal. She was elected as UUP campaigner for North Down constituency to contest the general election in 2001, and beat incumbent Robert McCartney of the UK Unionist Party by a whopping 7000 votes. During the campaign, she earned the backing by the local branch Alliance Party of Northern Ireland and they voted to withdraw the candidate they had chosen.

In 2009, Hermon announced her opposition to the Ulster Unionist link-up with the Conservative Party. She declared, in an unplanned announcement, during an interview in her constituency office,

On 23 February 2010, Hermon confirmed that she would not be seeking the nomination as a Conservative and Unionist candidate. In her parliamentary votes, she was closer to the Labour Party than the Conservative Party. On 6 May 2010, standing as an Independent unionist candidate, she was re-elected with a majority of over 14,000 votes ahead of the “Ulster Conservatives and Unionists – New Force” candidate. She was re-elected in May 2015 and June 2017, both times as an Independent unionist, and the only independent MP elected in those Parliaments.

Hermon was the sole Ulster Unionist to be returned to Westminster in the general election, and she was a part of the debate over who will take over from David Trimble as party leader. Initially thought to be among the leading candidates, Hermon eventually declined the chance, claiming that she was unable to take on the responsibility to care for her husband who was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Hermon instead, she backed the unsuccessful campaign for the position of Alan McFarland.
