Sylvain Chavanel (born 30 June 1979) is a French professional road bike racer, who raced professionally from 2000 to 2018 for Cofidis, Omega Pharma-Quick-Step, IAM Cycling and two spells with the Brioches la Boulangere/Direct Energy team. The brother of Sebastien Chavanel was also professional cyclist. Sylvain Chavanel was regarded as an all-rounder with a lot of strength who was a winner in both time-trials and sprints and was also a great northern classics rider. He scored 45 wins throughout the course of his career.

Chavanel stated the year 2007 that he received offers from international teams but was dissuaded from joining because he was not sure about his pension obligations outside France. In July 2008, he stated that he had negotiated to Patrick Lefevere the directeur sportif to join the Quick-Step team in Belgium for 2009. Chavanel stated that he took the decision to leave after having performed very well in classic races in Belgium at the beginning in the season. He took home Dwars of Vlaanderen and Brabantse Pijl. He also said:

On 3 September 2008, he came second in the individual time trial stage of the Vuelta a España at Ciudad Real. His ride brought him to second place overall, two seconds slower than the American, Levi Leipheimer. His team worked for him next day from Ciudad Real to Toledo to make sure he won time bonuses offered along the route. The six seconds he collected were enough to give him the leader’s jersey on 4 September.

On 25 July 2008 Chavanel won the 19th stage of the Tour de France by outsprinting Jérémy Roy at Montluçon. That and other performances brought him election as the most combative rider of the race.

Chavanel was the first rider to take part in the Tour de France at 22 and finished 65th. He then finishing third at the Tour de l’Avenir behind Denis Menchov and Florent Brard. In 2002, he took his first race, the Four Days of Dunkirk and placed second at the Tour of Belgium. He won both races in 2005.

He started racing when he was 13 years old. He was a winner of over 29 times on the track as a teenager and junior. He was the winner of his first national championship for juniors in the year 1997. The uncle of his, Philippe Raby, a former racer from the Vendee region, suggested Chavanel to Jean-Rene Bernaudeau who was building a professional team that was based in the region. Bernardeau witnessed Chavanel race first time at Montreveau in Maine-et-Loire in France, while competing against the Bernardeau’s Vendee U junior team.

Bernardeau and Chavanel decided that Chavanel will continue to work at his team, AC Chatellerault, which was spending time and money in his coaching. The assistant of Bernardeau, Thierry Bricau, was appointed to provide Chavanel with a programme of training. Chavanel took part in on the Tour de l’Avenir in 1999 and, in 2000 at the age of 21, he became a professional with Bernardeau’s Bonjour team, which was financed by a network of regional newspapers. He was the winner of in the opening stage of Circuit Franco-Belge and lost his jersey of the leader on the final day. He also took home the climbers’ jersey during the Tour de l’Avenir by breaking through the Pyrenees and ridden 217 km (135 miles) in a single ride in top of the Paris-Tours.

Chavanel was born in Châtellerault, France, although his family roots are in Spain. His great-grandparents were from Huesca, in the Aragon region. His grandfather was born in Barcelona and moved to Châtellerault during the Spanish Civil War. Other members of the family still live in Aragon. He said: “Last year [2007], when the Vuelta was in Zaragoza, I got to know the cousin of mine using a journalist as the translator and she gave me a picture of my grandfather when he was young. Despite my origins, I hardly know a word of Spanish – just swear words”.
