When the United People’s Freedom Alliance in 2004 Premajayantha was appointed its first general secretary of the group. After it was the United People’s Freedom Alliance won the general elections in 2004, He was appointed to the post in the Ministry of Power and Energy When Mahinda Rajapaksa was elected President, he was named the Minister for Education and following the general elections in 2010, he was his Minister for Petroleum Industries and in a 2012 cabinet reshuffle, he was appointed the minister for Environment and Renewable Energy
In 2000, he joined his first parliament as a representative of Gampaha District and became the Minister of Education. Although Premajayantha’s People’s Alliance was defeated in the general elections in 2001, Premajayantha was elected back to Parliament of Colombo District and held his seat until the next elections.

Premajayantha completed his schooling in the primary as well as secondary levels at St. John’s College, Nugegoda. Following that, he went to his first year at University of Colombo and received the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1982 and became an attorney on the Law when he graduated in 1984. In 2004, He also obtained an Masters in public Administration at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
Premajayantha was elected to the political scene in the year 1991 when he was elected the Vice Chairman of Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte Urban Council. In 1993, he became a member of his position on the Western Provincial Council and was elected as the Chief Minister in 1995.
On 25 August 2015, few days after general elections he resigned as the General Secretary of the United People’s Freedom Alliance. Few days prior to the elections he was removed from the position by the party Chairman, President Maithripala Sirisena. After the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and United National Party signed a Memorandum of Understanding to form a National unity government, Premajayantha became the Minister of Technology and Research
