After returning to Spain at the end of 1993 Clarke was able to begin thinking about the possibility of writing her own novel. She registered for an all-day science fiction and fantasy writing class, taught by fantasy and science fiction writer Colin Greenland and Geoff Ryman. Students were required to write a short story prior to the workshop, however Clarke was left with “bundles” of material for her novel. From these, she compiled “The Ladies of Grace Adieu” A story of three women practicing magic in secret that are discovered by the well-known Jonathan Strange. Greenland found herself so impressed by the story that, despite Clarke’s knowledge, she sent an extract to his friend, the writer of fantasy Neil Gaiman. Gaiman later stated, “It was terrifying from my point of view to read this first short story that had so much assurance … It was like watching someone sit down to play the piano for the first time and she plays a sonata.” Gaiman presented this story to his close friend the science-fiction editor and writer Patrick Nielsen Hayden. Clarke was informed of the events at the time Nielsen Hayden called and offered to publish the tale in the collection Starlight 1 (1996), which included pieces from well-known authors of science fiction and fantasy. She agreed, and the book was awarded the World Fantasy Award for best anthology in 1997.
