Kunze has been a member of the NCTM Illuminations Writing Group, the LearnZillion Dream Team, a CommonSense Educator, and the State Network of Educators for the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. She was a member of the California State Mathematics Framework and Evaluation Criteria Committee, which authored the California Common Core Mathematics Framework in 2013. She is a member of the Teacher Advisory Council for the California Council on Science and Technology.

Her career began in 1977 as teacher for Trinity Christian School in Las Vegas, Nevada. She spent the majority of her teaching time working at Bishop Elementary School (Bishop Unified School District) located in Inyo County. She worked in the role of an elementary school teacher until 1985 until her retirement in 2016.
