Dame Susan Elizabeth Anne Devoy DNZM CBE (born on January 4, 1964) is an ex- New Zealand squash player who was a dominant player during the latter half of the 1980s and the beginning of 1990s. She was the champion of the World Open on four occasions.
Devoy frequently has requested an expansion of the nation’s annual refugee quota, pointing out that it has remained the same since 1987.
In 1998, she became a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, the youngest New Zealander since Sir Edmund Hillary to receive a titular honour. In between her charity work she is also a professional speaker in motivation and inspiration. In 2007, she appeared on Like Minds, Like Mine TV commercials in New Zealand to counter the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness.
In the October 2001 local elections, she successfully stood in the inaugural district health board elections for Auckland DHB on the Citizens & Ratepayers- Now ticket. She resigned from that position in February 2004, citing concerns about limited political impact that DHBs have but also because she had since moved to Tauranga.
As part of the year 1986, in the New Year Honours, Devoy was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire and was promoted to the rank of Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1993’s Queen’s Birthday Honours. Devoy is also renowned for her work in the field of charity as one of the New Zealand Patron on the Muscular Dystrophy Association. In 1988, she walked across through the entirety of New Zealand, over seven weeks which raised over $500,000 in aid of the charity. Other accomplishments include being recognized as a New Zealand Sports Person and Sports Woman in 1985. She also received the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal.

The family was born in Rotorua, New Zealand, Devoy went to MacKillop College. Her family was active with the squash club and she started playing squash when she was a young girl. Devoy became a professional aged 17. She won her debut World Open title came in 1985, followed by a victory in 1987. The next two World Open titles came in 1990 and 1992. Through the majority of her career it was Devoy won the World Open was held biennially which prevented Devoy possibly doubling her winnings. However, she did be the winner of the famous British Open eight times, which was only beat by Heather McKay in the 1960s/70s and also by Janet Morgan in the 1950s.
She got married to her manager and squash athlete John Oakley, on 12 December 1986, in the Rotorua’s St Michael’s Church, and they have four sons, the oldest being track and field athlete Julian Oakley. Julian is an NCAA Division 1 athlete at Providence College, located in Rhode Island, USA, and holds an 3:57.22 personal best in the mile.
