Sunshine Becker (born Sunshine Flower Garcia on July 1st July 1972) is an American artist who played back-up vocals in the band Furthur. Despite her initial name of Garcia Becker, she’s not connected to Jerry Garcia, an incorrect perception made by some due to of her connection to Furthur the post-Garcia form that was part of the Grateful Dead. Also, despite her birth title, Sunshine, she is not to be confused with Sunshine Kesey, daughter of Ken Kesey and Carolyn Adams (aka Mountain Girl or MG) Jerry Garcia’s second wife.

On November 21 2008, December 26 2009, Jan. 28, 2011 Sunshine performed the National Anthem prior to her performances at the Oakland Golden State Warriors basketball games. Then, the 6th of April, 2010, she sang the national anthem prior to she performed at the Oakland Athletics baseball game. On December 12 2010 she sang alongside Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Jackie Greene, and Jeff Pehrson, at the annual Philharmonia benefit concert in San Francisco. Also, she performed on the 3rd December of 2011, at Run for the Roses: A One-of-a-Kind Musical Evening a Rex Foundation benefit show in which she, along together with John Kadlecik, Melvin Seals, Greg Anton and Robin Sylvester also performed a Jerry Garcia Band tribute set.

Sixth grade aged 11, Sunshine learned to play the flute and recorder. When she was a freshman at High School, she was a member of the school’s most prestigious marching band. She eventually became the leader of the flute/woodwind section and in 1988, they were the winners of an award during the Fiesta Bowl. After graduation from high school Sunshine was a student at California State University in Hayward, CA from 1990 until 1992, majoring in the field of Expressive Arts. After leaving Cal State, she moved to a home situated in San Francisco with several other hopeful musicians such as Jeff Pehrson, Jim Brunberg (of Box Set) and Jay Shaffer (of Passenger). Through the decades, Sunshine worked variously as singer with Oakland Youth Chorus’ touring the a cappella group Vocal Motion, jam bands Passenger and Box Set, the funky drummer Ziggy Modeliste, as well as a studio session vocalist. She ultimately refocused her efforts in 1995 on SoVoSo (meaning “from the SOul to the VOice to the SOng”) the highly acclaimed improvisational acappella group that grew out of Bobby McFerrin’s vocal band, Voicestra. She continues to be very active with SoVoSo and performs at times with Passenger. She also serves as Instructor for Young Performers International, a non-profit company for children’s performing arts located in San Francisco, leads ongoing classes on the art of CircleSinging and also provides individual coaching for vocals.

Sunshine is a native of Oakland, California, to Gabriel Garcia and Juddee Kawaiola (nee Watrous). Her father is of Hispanic descent, hails originally from New Mexico and is a musician, playing mostly the tenor saxophone but also piano, double bass and drums. Her mother comes from Dutch, French, and English origin, hails born in San Francisco, and studied the theater at college. Sunshine’s parents got married during the year in Oakland, CA. She has a brothernamed Sean Gabriel Garcia, who is four years older and who chose his middle name Flower in honor of her, when her birth. She was raised within California’s East Bay area in Oakland, CA and Hayward, CA and was a student at James Logan High School in Union City, CA, which she graduated from in 1990.

In late 2009, Furthur decided to add backing vocals to their newly formed band. Zoe Ellis, a well-known Bay Area vocalist who has been a member of SoVoSó since 2005, was initially approached by the band, as she had previously been a backing vocalist for Phil Lesh and Friends, having performed on the 1999 album, Love Will See You Through. Zoe, who is the sister of Dave Ellis, former saxophonist for Bob Weir’s RatDog, accepted the offer to join Furthur. However, her friend and former singing partner, Caitlin Cornwell, who was also approached by Furthur (and who also provided backing vocals for Phil and Friends and who is a former member of SoVoSó), was not able to commit. As an alternative choice, Zoe recommended Sunshine, her friend and singing partner from SoVoSó (and a longtime fan of the Grateful Dead), who readily accepted. Sunshine’s and Zoe’s audition for Furthur occurred at the Philharmonia benefit concert in San Francisco on December 20, 2009, where they performed with Lesh, Weir, and Jackie Greene. The backup vocalists’ debut Furthur show was on December 30, 2009 (although they also performed at the live rehearsal sessions at the Mill Valley Masonic Center on December 27 and 28). Zoe toured with Furthur until March 12, 2010; Jeff Pehrson subsequently joined Furthur as a backing vocalist on May 24, 2010.
