In his early years, Sun Rui started to be different from the traditional dancers in his time and also win numerous awards in National competitions. At 16 years old He was awarded gold in the Junior category of the 6th ‘Peach and Plum Cup Dance Competition (Tao Li Bei ) that is among the most prestigious contests for dance in China. The dance he performed in the competition the dance ‘Little Boy’ (Xiao Er Lang ), has been so popular that it’s repeated a variety of youngsters in various dance competitions ever since. In 2003, with the dance “Bamboo Dream” (Zhu Meng ), he was awarded silver in the category of classical dance (senior category) in the seventh ‘Peach and Plum Cup dance Competition (Tao Li Bei ). As of 2005, other version of “Bamboo Dream” (Zhu Meng ) earned him silver in the category of classical dance at the 3rd CCTV Dance Competition. A few months after Sun Rui won his first national dance prize the tragedy occurred to Sun Rui in the midst of a tragedy. In the month of February 2001, a car crash took place for him as well as other dancers in junior class when they were on tour in conjunction with The Secondary School of Beijing Dance Academy in the United States. While he was able to escape the devastating accident the pelvis of his was broken. Because this bone is crucial to dancers his dance career appeared to be in danger. However, Sun Rui did not give up. After an exhausting rehabilitation, and more intense training, he stepped on stage once more. His quest to reach the podiums of numerous international and national dance competitions began again.

In Jan of 2009, he was chosen as the lead dancer of the dance ‘Butterfly Love for Flowers’ (蝶恋花) in the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. His performance showed the life of a butterfly and its love for flowers. ‘Butterfly Love for Flowers’ was later voted by the national audience as ‘My Favorite Dancing and Singing Show’ of the CCTV Spring Festival Gala 09. Since then, his popularity expands from the dance communities and dance fans to more and more Chinese audience.
