Subodh Kerkar Biography

Subodh Kerkar is one of the most popular and richest Painter who was born on August 26, 1959 in Goa, India. He designed his Carpet of Joy – an art piece to highlight the excessive trashing that was taking place in Goa to mark this year’s 100th anniversary, which marks Gandhi’s initial practice of Satyagraha (which Gandhi began in Champaran on the 10th of April in 1917). It was made using 150,000 recycled plastic bottles that were collected from hotels and beaches in Goa and woven into the carpet. To commemorate the occasion Kerkar also worked together with a group of software engineers as well as Dmytro Dokunov an artist who is digital from Ukraine who created an app for smartphones that augmented reality known as “Gandhi AR”, which will show a statue of Gandhi when you point it at any Indian currency (which has a picture of Gandhi on it).).

In the early 2000s, Kerkar began his foray into the realm that is known as “land art”. He started by making sculptures made of garbage and scrap. Then, in the year 2002, he produced an installation art work titled Tenth Planet. He then re-created it with Sea Anemone. In Goa’s initial IFFI in 2004 Kerkar was selected to build 500 meters of structures in Miramar beach.

In 2009, Kerkar launched an art exhibition in Mumbai to mark the anniversary of the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

In 2011, he was invited by the Dean of Visva-Bharati University at Shantiniketan, to conduct a workshop. In the same year, he created a fibre glass sculpture of a robot with an ass’ head.

He opened his own gallery of art located in Calangute, Goa. The gallery was named “Kerkar Art Complex”, and included an open-air auditorium. Also, he began to exhibit in galleries throughout the United States.

Subodh Kerkar was born on 26 August 1959 in Pernem, Goa. A child of an art instructor and art teacher, he was always an interest in the arts. When he grew up and becoming a school leader with a variety of cartoons to his name. He then enrolled at Goa Medical College and became a physician by profession. After that, he managed an office and a privately-owned practice for couple of years in Calangute and then resigned and decided to pursue a career as an artist.

In 2009, Kerkar launched an exhibition of sketches of Lord Ganesha. Organizations such as the Sanatan Sanstha called for protests, while others like the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and the Shri Samarth Ramdas Seva Bhakti Mandal chose to file a police complaint under Section 149 of the Indian Penal Code, for hurting religious sentiments. Kerkar alleged that he received threats on his life for his work.
