Damned If You Don’t is the film about Catholicism and lesbianism, particularly the sexuality of nuns. The narrative in the film has three layers in its structure; a young woman seducing a young nun; adaptation of Powell and Pressburger’s film, Black Narcissus (1947) that is about a nun in the convent in Himalayas; reading of Judith C. Brown’s Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy. By exploiting the layered narratives, Damned If You Don’t reveals a common assumption in melodrama that all desire is heterosexual, and shows a new direction of depiction of female desire, pleasure and sexuality.
Friedrich’s films frequently blend elements of narrative documentary and experimental forms of filmmaking. They often concentrate on the role of families, women and homosexuality in the present day of America. Since the beginning at the end of 1970s Friedrich has been a major filmmaker of the avant-garde and was a major force in the creation and development of Queer Cinema. Her work has radically altered film’s form and content through the incorporation of a feminist view and questions of identity for lesbians and has created a stunning and original synthesis of novel, narrative or documentary forms. Friedrich’s films are multilingual, shifting between intimate and the political and autobiographical, from films about family and relationships to the exploration of how society views sexuality. Her cinematic repertoire comprises home movies, archival footage, interviews, as well as written narratives.
