When 1987 began, Etherington became a member of his first job at the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) as Director of Public Affairs. He was appointed Chief Executive in 1991. was appointed as the Chief Executive of the RNID and was 35. The 1st of February 1994 was the day the RNID appointed him the chief executive of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO). Under his direction and tenure, the NCVO has grown its membership dramatically: as of February 2016 , it had more than 12,000 organisations.

From 2002 to 2006, Etherington was a member of the University Court of the Open University. From 2008 to 2013, he was a Pro-Chancellor and the Chair of Court of the University of Greenwich.

In the 2010 Queen’s Birthday Honours, Etherington was appointed a Knight Bachelor “for services to the Third Sector”, and therefore granted the title sir. He was knighted by Anne, Princess Royal (on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II) during a ceremony held at Buckingham Palace on 25 November 2010.

Etherington holds several university degrees. He was a student of politics at Brunel University, and earned the bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in 1977. He holds earned a Master of Arts (MA) degree in social service planning from the University of Essex, and an MA degree in diplomacy and international relations in diplomacy and international relations from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He also holds an Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the London Business School, University of London.
