Steven Shainberg (born February 5 1963) is an American film producer and director. He is the son of the author Lawrence Shainberg. Both belong to the Shainberg family from Memphis, Tennessee, founder of the chain of Shainberg’s stores, currently an integral part of Dollar General.

Shainberg earned his BA in English Literature from Yale University in English Literature and East Asian studies. Following his graduation, he was employed as an assistant manager of locations as well as assistant director, production coordinator as well as assistant editor on several of commercials, films, or rock music videos. He was also an independent producer who created adaptions of Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent and Henry James’ The Americans. The American Film Institute, he composed and directed four short films, among them The Prom starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, Andras Jones and J. T. Walsh. The Prom won the Grand Prize at the Houston International Film Festival, the Critics’ Award at the Breckenridge Film Festival, and the Silver Medal for Drama at the New York Film Festival.

Shainberg’s film Fur A imaginative Portrait of Diane Arbus starring Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr. was an improbable account about the personal life and work of famous photographer Diane Arbus. The film, which debuted in 2006 was met with mixed critiques from critics.
