Steven Horwitz (born 7 February 1964) is an American economist from the Austrian School of Economics. Horwitz serves as the distinguished professor of Free Enterprise in the Department of Economics within the Miller College of Business at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. The year 2017 was the time he announced his retirement from his position as Dana Prof. of Economics Emeritus from St. Lawrence University.

A large portion of Horwitz’s professional experience has been in the field of macroeconomic theory and monetary theory using an Austrian school viewpoint and his book from 2000 Microfoundations and Macroeconomics: An Austrian Perspective providing the most comprehensive overview of this work. Horwitz also has made contributions to Austrian economics and the development of economic thought, as well as the social philosophy and philosophy of F. A. Hayek. In recent times the author has been studying the sociology and economics of the family, which includes his most recent book on Hayek’s Modern Family: Classical Liberalism and the development of social Institutions. The book’s “Open Letter to My Friends on the Left” in September 2008 was a well read analysis of libertarians’ view on the crisis in mortgages. The book was published in five different languages. He is a regular editorial contributor to major newspapers, and has appeared on numerous radio programs and TV shows in Stossel, Freedom Watch, and Smerconish on CNN.

Outside of his professional interests, Horwitz is a huge fan of hockey, especially the Detroit Red Wings, and classic rock, especially the Canadian band Rush. He combined his hobby and his professional life having written two scholarly articles on Rush in 2003.

Horwitz is a long-time faculty member at the summer seminars of the Institute for Humane Studies and the Foundation for Economic Education. In summer 2007, he was a visiting scholar at the Social Philosophy and Policy Center at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Horwitz is a Senior Affiliated Scholar of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University in Arlington, Virginia, where he has conducted nationally recognized research on the role of Wal-Mart and the Coast Guard in the response to Hurricane Katrina. He is also a senior fellow of the Fraser Institute in Canada and has been a member of the Mont Pelerin Society since 1996.

As of 1989, Horwitz was appointed to the department of economics at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. The year 1993 was the time he received the first Flora Irene Eggleston Chair in Economics. He was elevated into associate professor, with tenure status in 1995, and to full professor in 2002. He was promoted to full professor in 1999. won the Frank Piskor Lectureship each year and in 2003 Horwitz was awarded the J. Calvin Keene award, which acknowledges the highest standards of academic excellence, outstanding teaching, and moral concern. In 2007 Horwitz was chosen by faculty members to one of the campuses-wide Charles A. Dana Professorships.

Horwitz was born in Detroit, Michigan to Ronald Horwitz and Carol Horwitz. Horwitz was raised within Oak Park, Michigan and graduated from Berkley High School in Berkley, Michigan in 1981. He received an A.B. in Philosophy and Economics at the University of Michigan in 1985 and was active in numerous student groups of the libertarian movement and composed and performed for The Sunday Funnies/Comedy Company sketch comedy group.

He earned his M.A. (1987) as well as a Ph.D. (1990) in Economics from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. In George Mason, he studied with Don Lavoie (who chaired his dissertation committee), George Selgin, Karen Vaughn, James M. Buchanan, Don Boudreaux as well as Richard E. Wagner.

At St. Lawrence, Horwitz served as the Associate Dean of the First Year from 2001 to 2007, overseeing the university’s First Year Program. He was also interim director of the Center for Teaching and Learning in 2003–04.
