Steven Heller was born July 7th 50th, 1950, in New York City to Bernice and Milton Heller. He was a student at his time at the Walden School, a progressive prep school located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and a military school. He was Director of Art for The New York Free Press without any formal training or qualifications due to his leftist tendencies and later attended some New York University lectures utilizing his press pass. He was introduced to the illustrator Brad Holland who convinced him that layouts on pages and the type of font were crucial, which Heller was previously unaware of. In the aftermath of his time with the Free Press, he moved into various magazines that included sexual tabloid Screw.
The year 1996 was the first time he received an induction to in 1996 into the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame. in 1999 Heller got the AIGA Medal for what graphic designer Paula Scher described as “lifetime achievement that comes from a workday existing roughly between 4:30 and 8:45 A.M. before a full workday at the New York Times Book Review.” In 2005, the Society of Illustrators honored Heller with the Richard Gangel Art Director Award in 2005. In 2017 the AIGA established an award named the Steven Heller Prize for Cultural Commentary in honor of his memory in recognition of his 30 years of contributions to the cultural debate regarding design. In 2011, he was awarded with the Design Mind Award by the National Design Museum.
In 2008, Heller co-founded the MFA in design criticism program (D-Crit) with Alice Twemlow. The program was intended to help non-designers find a place in the design field. As of 2019, His on the faculty of the School of Visual Arts as co-chair of the MFA Design Department, special assistant to the president, and co-founder of the MFA Design Criticism, MPS Branding, MFA Interaction Design, MFA Products of Design programs. Heller’s pupils have included Deborah Adler.
The 1980s were when he began to become fascinated by design thanks to relationships in the 1980s with Seymour Chwast and Louise Fili who later became his wife in the 1980s, and later became the editor of AIGA Journal of Graphic Design. Under his supervision the Journal turned into a hub for critical design writing, bringing in writers from all kinds of professions , and encouraging the careers of young critics who analyzed the writing of designers. The year 1984 was the time that Heller was instrumental in establishing the Master’s degree in Illustration in the School of Visual Arts.
