Steven Scott Gubser (May 4 1972 – August 3 2019) was an physics professor in the Physics Department at Princeton University. His work was on the theoretical aspects of particle physics, particularly string theory and the CFT/AdS correspondence. He was a highly cited expert in these and related fields.

Gubser was killed in a rock climber’s incident that occurred in Chamonix, France on August 3 2019.

Gubser performed fundamental work on the AdS/CFT correspondence while an undergraduate student. Particularly his paper from 1998, Gauge Theory Correlators from Non-Critical String Theory along with His advisor Igor Klebanov and another Princeton Physics professor Alexander Markovich Polyakov, made an exact statement about the dual nature of AdS and CFT. It is among the most referenced papers in the field of theoretical high-energy Physics, and is referred to as well as Edward Witten’s work from 1998, Anti De Sitter Space And Holography for its GKPW dictionary. After obtaining the Ph.D. at the end of 1998 at Princeton, Gubser became a Junior Fellow at Harvard University before taking a job in the position of assistant professor Princeton. Then, in 2001, he transferred towards California Institute of Technology. California Institute of Technology but returned to Princeton in 2002. Gubser’s work in the following years has focused on different aspects of the CFT/ADS correspondence and its application in quantum chromodynamics, as well as condensed matter Physics. In 2016, he and his collaborators have proposed a p-adic model of AdS/CFT correspondence.
