Steven Barnes (born March 1 1952) is an American science fiction or fantasy writer. He has written screen plays, short fiction for television, comic books and newspaper copy, animation and magazines’ articles.
Barnes is also a keen athlete in the martial and physical arts. He began his training in 1969. He holds black belt in Kenpo Karate (BKF style) as well as Kodokan Judo. He has a certificate of instructor from Wu Ming Ta, and holds an instructor-in-training ranking in Filipino Kali stick and knife combat. He is a master participant of Jun Fan kickboxing (Bruce Lee method taught by Dan Inosanto), and is an instructor in Wu-style Tai Chi Ch’uan under the guidance of Hawkins Cheung.
Together with his wife, Tananarive Due, and actor Blair Underwood, Barnes won the 2009 NAACP Image Award for outstanding Literary Work – Fiction for In the Night of the Heat: A Tennyson Hardwick Novel.
