Steven “Steve” Walklate (born 27 September 1979) is an English former professional footballer with a career in the Football League for Darlington and in the Scottish League for Queen of the South. He started his career with Middlesbrough but did not play in the first team with them. He also played in non-league football for several clubs in north-east England mostly playing in the Northern League.

After his release Walklate was a part of 2 Northern Premier League matches for Blyth Spartans, and then one Scottish Second Division match as a trialist with Queen of the South, in a draw of 2-2 against Berwick Rangers on 25 March. The club signed him and was in the squad for the following game which was also played against Berwick as well as another draw, and played at five out of Queens remaining matches, but none as an active player.

Walklate played the 2005-06 campaign in the 2005-06 season with Bedlington Terriers, and then was signed by Sunderland Nissan. He was at Nissan over two years, during the second, He was awarded the Manager’s player of the Award of the Year. In the same year, he also was an integral part of the Hetton Lyons team that won the FA Sunday Cup. Walklate later spent three seasons at Shildon as well as a couple of months working with Bishop Auckland, and a period playing for Crook Town during which he helped them to win their Northern League Division Two title.

Walklate is a native of Durham and was a part of Chester-le-Street Junior Schools representative football team for two years, rather than the regular one and was a player with Durham County Schools at under-16 level. He started his career at Middlesbrough but did not make it in their first team and, after a trial, was signed by Darlington in the midst of his debut in the 2000-01 Football League season. The first time he played was on September 2, 2000 as a second-half substitute for the Division Three match at home against York City which finished as 1-1 draw. He was first to start the League Cup visit to Division One club Nottingham Forest a few days after and was substituted at half-time by the eventual match-winner Stuart Elliott. He also participated in the following round of the tournament, when Darlington fell 7-2 against Premier League club Bradford City. His contract for short-term was extended and he continued to make six appearances in all competitions the final one being on the 26th of December, prior to his release at conclusion of February 2001. The Northern Echo’s reporter Manager Gary Bennett was having to solicit his players Walklate not excluding, “to fill the boots of their of their quality predecessors – but the new bunch simply weren’t up to the task”.

Then he returned to England and was a part of Durham City of the Northern League and would stay for four years. He helped the team achieve four consecutive top-six finishes including runners-up spots in 2003-2004. In his first season they advanced through seven rounds of the semi-finals in the FA Vase only to lose to Whitley Bay with an aggregate score as well as Walklate was the first player to score a goal in his career for Durham during the Northern League Challenge Cup final that saw Durham defeated Shildon by scoring the golden score to win their first trophy of their senior era. The second and third seasons were interrupted by a fracture to the leg that was doubled sustained during a game in March 2003. He made his return to the team in October at the close of the season. He scored two goals in league games, at the end of each 2004-05 campaign: the final fourth of a 4-0 win at home to Billingham Town, and a 35-yard (32 m) strike in a draw with West Auckland Town.
