Alongside Sweeney, Steen appeared in the Channel 4 television improvisational show Whose Line is It Anyway? during six seasons. Also, he was an actor on the BBC’s comedy show for six episodes. I Got News for You in 1992.
In 2005, Steen appeared at the National Theatre in London as Charles Dickens in Theatre of Blood, based on the 1970 cinema film of the same name.
Rory Bremner recruited them as the resident performers in his sketch show debut at the BBC. In 1987, they played their character Romantic poetry duo Byron as well as Coleridge (Steen acting as Byron) in an episode titled “Ink and Incapability” of the comedy series Blackadder the Third.

When he was a student in Clapham College in London, Steen was introduced to Jim Sweeney, and they joined the Oval House theatre club in 1972. They were performing an improvised comedy. They created and performed in a show which was a parody of many of the other shows that were being staged in London the year. They then formed their own theatre company , and created and performed its shows across in the United Kingdom through the 1970s.
In the 1980s, Steen and Sweeney entered the world of production on television, appearing as a couple for the very first time on ITV children’s program CBTV The show was followed by one of the first Channel 4 comedy series, Little Armadillos. In the same time, Steen made an appearance in The Ben Elton comedy Happy Families.
In 2000, Steen played the voice of cartoon gerbil El Nombre.
