He helped lead the Boilermakers to a Big Ten Conference title, along with seniors Todd Mitchell and Everette Stephens, a sixth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, making it to the Sweet Sixteen, and onto a 29–4 record after losing to a Mitch Richmond-led Kansas State team.
Scheffler was drafted for the Charlotte Hornets in the 2nd round (39th overall) of the 1990 NBA Draft. He was a part of the Hornets, Sacramento Kings, Denver Nuggets and Seattle SuperSonics during seven NBA seasons. Scheffler was part of the Sonics as they made it to their 1997 NBA Finals and played briefly in five in the 6 games played against Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls as a popular crowd-pleaser at KeyArena when he was on the bench. Scheffler was an avid fan in Seattle because of his rare appearances and his amazing efforts at scoring in blowout situations in the final moments of games.
