He is a native of Las Vegas, Nevada, Rodriguez was drafted to be selected by Boston in the fifth round of the draft in 1992 out from Pepperdine. Rodriguez was hired as the 19th head coach of the Baylor University baseball team on June 12, 2015.

In charge of a team that was young in the year 2004, Rodriguez guided Pepperdine to the WCC Championship in which the Waves defeated their conference foe Loyola Marymount University in the best-of-3 WCC championship game.

Following his professional profession, Rodriguez served as an assistant coach at his old school from 2000 until 2003 and then as the director from the year 2004 until 2015. Rodriguez was appointed the 16th director of football in the history of the Pepperdine baseball team in June 2003. He would be the only former Pepperdine player to head coach the Waves during the sixty-five years of the program’s history.

Two-time Waves All-American (1991-92), Rodriguez helped his team win its first national title during the year 1992’s College World Series, when Rodriguez was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year. He also was an official member of the All-Tournament Team. Rodriguez had the .419 hitting average -the third highest single-season mark in school historyand the 104 hits he recorded during that season also set an all-time Pepperdine single-season record. Rodriguez compiled the .382 average during round-robin play during the 1991 Pan American Games for the Bronze Medal USA baseball team and was awarded player of the Series awards in the series against Mexico in addition to Cuba. In 1993, Rodriguez earned the distinction of West Coast Conference’s most outstanding Fifty athletes in history.

In his 18-game career in the major leagues, Rodriguez was a .179 player (7-for-39) including five hits, two doubles and two bases that were stolen, without any home runs or RBI. Rodriguez also played in minor leagues with the Red Sox, Tigers, Los Angeles Dodgers and Montreal Expos minor leagues between 1992-98. He hit .263 having scored 16 home runs as well as the score of 205 RBI over 613 total games.

In 2015, Rodriguez was hired to be the head coach at Baylor.
